"Perspectives from Normative Economics on Epistemic Democracy and Epistemic Justice"

Vienna-Graz-Workshop on Computational Social Choice - March 6 & 7, 2023

Program

Since the middle of the 20th century, and driven by the advent of the information society and its network economy the role of knowledge has gained increasing attention in the social sciences in general and in economics in particular. In a parallel academic development, the social, interactive, and strategic dimension of knowledge has been highlighted in fields as diverse as social epistemology or multiagent systems.
In particular the generalization of social choice theory from the aggregation of preferences to the aggregation of arbitrary information in the recent literature on judgment aggregation has dramatically increased the significance of social choice theory for political philosophy and in particular the theory of democracy, as evidenced by the ample literature on Condorcet’s jury theorem.

The aim of this workshop is to explore connections between normative economics and the pressing issues of epistemic democracy and epistemic justice and to bring together researchers who explore these new avenues.
The specific issues we want to address are largely familiar from normative economics: Justice, Inequality, and Power. The specific goal of the workshop is thus to discuss possible adaptations of the corresponding models from normative economics to make them applicable to the issues of epistemic democracy and epistemic justice.

This Workshop is organized by Christian Klamler, University of Graz, and Stefan Woltran, TU Vienna.

Local Organizers: Daniel Eckert and Andreas Darmann
