Improved prediction of assets with applications for the real estate and stock market
Project Management: Robert Hill and Michael Scholz
Duration: October 2013 to October 2015
Acquired Means: 140,000 Euro (OeNB – “Jubiläumsfonds”)
Nonlinear models are particularly well suited to predict asset prices because they allow for asymmetric adjustments. As part of the project, the class of "general nonlinear structural" models will be modified to the extent that "prior" information as well as micro-level data can be included in the analysis. With these extensions, the quality of predictions can be improved significantly. Our methods find applications with respect to data of the real estate and the stock market. The importance of asset prices is shown impressively by the ongoing financial crisis (particularly the real estate market). Therefore, central banks will have to pay more attention in future asset price development. Since monetary policy works with lags, improved predictions of assets in this process will play an extremely important role.

Research at the Schumpeter Centre
Head: Richard Sturn
Duration: Permanent Research Group
The Graz Schumpeter Centre looks at issues in the research program "Economic and social dynamics" and aims at applying interdisciplinary approaches to research on economically and socio-politically relevant questions. We especially seek to provide internationally attractive and competitive offers for young scientists. Essential questions concern the role of innovation for competitiveness and economic development, the functioning of public institutions under conditions of multi-level governance (regional to supranational), and structural links and their dynamics in the globalization process.
