Alyssa Schneebaum, WU Vienna: "Gender in Economics"

The production of academic knowledge is never an objective process. This paper considers some of the ways in which gender norms and relations influence the knowledge produced in the discipline of economics. I show economics to be a “gendered” discipline, meaning that it is one whose objects of analysis, tools of analysis, and selection of practitioners are influenced by gender norms and structures. I study the gendered nature of several different elements of the discipline, including publication processes, quantitative data, teaching methods, and others, and discuss the ways in which the gender bias in these things makes the knowledge produced in economics partial.
